HEALTHCARE WEBSITE STRATEGY

Does Your Website Actually Reflect the Quality of Your Clinic?
After speaking with clinic owners and seeing their practices firsthand, I started noticing a surprising disconnect between the experience they create in person and the one patients see online.
Over the past several months, I’ve spoken with many clinic owners and healthcare providers about their practices—how they care for patients, what they believe in, what they do differently, and the experience they’ve worked hard to create.
Then I looked at their websites.
And I kept noticing the same disconnect:
The clinic they described to me was often very different from the clinic I experienced online.
A great practice can become almost invisible online
One dental clinic made this especially clear to me.
When I visited, the space was calm, modern and thoughtfully designed. Nothing felt rushed. When I spoke with the dentist, I learned that the same thinking extended to patient care—they intentionally allowed enough time for appointments and cared deeply about creating a comfortable experience, particularly for anxious patients.
It was a meaningful part of what made their practice different.
But I had already seen their website—and I knew none of it.
The website told me what services they provided, but it didn’t communicate the experience or philosophy behind the practice.
As a prospective patient, why would I have known to choose them over another dentist a few streets away?
THE PRACTICE I EXPERIENCED
- Calm
- Unhurried
- Thoughtful
- Patient-focused
THE WEBSITE I SAW
- Busy
- Content-heavy
- Generic
- Little sense of the experience
“I had already seen their website—and I knew none of this.”
Most clinic websites answer the wrong question
Many healthcare websites follow essentially the same formula:
Services. About. Contact information. Photos. Book Now.
Some look dated. Others are beautifully designed. But many are still functioning primarily as online brochures.
Most clinic websites answer:
“What services do we offer?”
But the patient is trying to answer:
“Why should I choose you?”
That’s a very different question.
A patient may arrive worried, in pain, looking for help for their child, uncertain about treatment, concerned about cost or insurance, or disappointed by something they’ve already tried.
They’re not simply looking for a service name.
They’re trying to determine:
Do you understand my problem?
Can you help someone like me?
Can I trust you?
Do I feel comfortable taking the next step?
Simply adding more “Book Now” buttons doesn’t answer those questions.
Try this test on your own website
Imagine removing your clinic’s name and logo from your website.
Would the remaining website still clearly belong to your practice?
Would a stranger recognize what makes you different?
Or could another clinic offering similar services replace your logo with theirs and leave most of the website unchanged?
This isn’t about filling your website with your personal story or trying to make healthcare overly emotional.
It’s about making the things that genuinely make your practice worth choosing visible to someone who has never met you.
That’s the part I often see missing.
A website isn't just a design project
Today, almost anyone can use a template or website builder to put services, photos, contact information and buttons onto a page.
Technically, that’s a website.
But creating pages and creating an effective digital patient experience are two different things.
Before I think about colours, fonts or layouts for a healthcare website, I want to understand the practice.
PATIENT → NEEDS & CONCERNS → TRUST → YOUR DIFFERENCE → DIGITAL EXPERIENCE
Those answers should influence what the patient sees, reads and experiences online.
The website should translate the value that already exists inside the clinic into something a stranger can recognize.
Before spending more on traffic, look at what happens after people arrive
This matters even more for clinics investing in Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO or other forms of marketing.
It’s easy to assume that disappointing results mean you need more traffic.
Sometimes you do.
But sometimes the bigger opportunity is what happens to the traffic you’re already paying for.
You can successfully bring a prospective patient to your website and still lose them if they don’t quickly understand why your clinic is relevant to them or why they should trust you over another option.
Before automatically spending more to bring more people in, it’s worth asking:
Are we giving the people already arriving enough reason to stay and take the next step?
Your clinic may already have what your website is missing
The interesting thing I’ve discovered through these conversations is that many clinic owners already have the differentiator I’m looking for.
How you treat patients
Your philosophy
Your expertise
The experience you’ve created
The problem isn’t always that the clinic needs to become more remarkable.
Sometimes, the clinic is already remarkable—the website simply doesn’t show it.
So open your website today and look at it as if you know absolutely nothing about your practice.
Ask yourself one question:
“If I were a patient comparing this clinic with several others right now, have I been given a meaningful reason to choose this one?”
If you’re not sure of the answer, that’s where I believe the real website conversation should begin.
See your website through a patient's eyes
I help healthcare practices uncover what makes them worth choosing and translate it into a clearer, more persuasive digital patient experience.
I’ll show you what a prospective patient may be seeing—and missing—on your current website.
